Our Promise
In California, we’re committed to maintaining the highest animal welfare and safety standards in Thoroughbred racing. And we have a track record of pushing those standards forward. It all starts with doing right by the horses. When that happens, everything else falls into place.
California racing is a leader in safety initiatives
We take our responsibility to horses and riders seriously — California has implemented numerous reforms in the past decade to protect all of our participants. Every horse undergoes at least two pre-race veterinary checks before being allowed to run, safety stewards continuously monitor track conditions, and we have the strictest rules in the country to ensure the humane treatment of horses in all respects. We are always working to improve our standards
When it comes to safety and the integrity of California racing, we never stop looking at ways to enhance our standards, which is why we were among the first states to adopt national uniform medication rules, and why we participate in national safety initiatives and partner with the University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and a premier drug testing program. Learn more about how we reduce risk.
Our commitment continues off the racetrack
The vast majority of California Thoroughbred owners voluntarily support racehorse retirement and retraining programs, as do many other racing industry participants. We categorically oppose the slaughter of Thoroughbreds for human consumption and we are always looking for humane alternatives. Learn more about Thoroughbred aftercare and our charitable giving.
